I am a counselling psychologist registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa, and work with children (play therapy), adolescents/teens, and adults. I am the school psychologist at King Edward VII Prep and High School in Johannesburg, and run a private practice in Parktown North. I completed a Masters degree in counselling psychology at the University of Pretoria in 2010.
People often ask me what the difference is between a counselling psychologist and a clinical psychologist, so here is a bit of clarification. A counselling psychologist is trained to assist people who are having difficulties in their lives relating to ‘normal’ or everyday life problems. My goal is often to help clients to find a way to work through or cope with something in their lives that cause them distress, or that they are struggling to deal with. Clinical psychologists are trained in the treatment of more serious psychopathology (such as bi-polar mood disorder, schizophrenia, etc.). There is however a lot of overlap between what counselling psychologists and clinical psychologists do, and their approach in a therapy session is often very similar.
My HPCSA registration number is PS0117153, and my practice number is 0557684.
